支謙譯 入庶人中,軟意湣傷,為興福力;入帝釋中,正帝釋意,為自在者,示現無常;入梵天中,正梵天意,能現梵殊勝之慧;入四天王,正天王意,能使擁護一切天下;如是長者維摩詰,不可稱說善權方便,無所不入。
鳩摩羅什譯 若在庶民,庶民中尊,令興福力;若在梵天,梵天中尊,誨以勝慧;若在帝釋,帝釋中尊,示現無常;若在護世,護世中尊,護諸眾生;長者維摩詰,以如是等無量方便饒益眾生。
玄奘譯 若在庶人,庶人中尊,修相似福,殊勝意樂;若在梵天,梵天中尊,示諸梵眾,靜慮差別;若在帝釋,帝釋中尊,示現自在,悉皆無常;若在護世,護世中尊,守護一切,利益安樂;是無垢稱,以如是等不可思議無量善巧方便慧門饒益有情。
英譯 He was compatible with ordinary people because he appreciated the excellence of ordinary merits. He was honored as the Indra among Indras because he showed them the temporality of their lordship. He was honored as the Brahmā among Brahmās because he showed them the special excellence of gnosis. He was honored as the Lokapāla among Lokapālas because he fostered the development of all living beings. Thus lived the Licchavi Vimalakīrti in the great city of Vaiśālī, endowed with an infinite knowledge of skill in liberative techniques.
現代漢譯 他能隨順一般人,目的在於獲得一般功德中最殊勝的(功德)。在帝釋天中,為帝釋天所尊敬,目的在於使(他們)看到神力的無常。在梵天中,為梵天所尊敬,目的在於顯現超凡的智慧。在護世者中,為護世者所尊敬,目的在於保護一切眾生。如上所述,離車族的維摩詰,具有如此一般能善巧運用方法的無量智慧。他住在毗舍離大城。
